The Presidents Cup has grown to become one of the most eagerly awaited and highly watched events in the world of golf. Every two years top players from the United States and an International Team culled from the ranks of the finest golfers outside Europe clash on a global stage in four days of team match-play competition.
In November of 2011 The Presidents Cup will return to The Royal Melbourne Golf Club for the first time since 1998 when the International team scored its first and, to date, only win over the United States with a decisive nine-point victory. The Club has a reputation for excellence and next year will achieve the distinction of being the first course outside the United States to host The Presidents Cup more than once.
Two of the games greatest champions in Greg Norman for the Internationals and Fred Couples for the United States will reprise their roles as captains for their respective sides in 2011. Both men have been global ambassadors for the game and embody everything that The Presidents Cup stands for. There is no doubt that Captain Norman and Captain Couples will once again showcase the incredible sportsmanship, leadership, and camaraderie that is hallmark to this storied competition.
Underscoring the spirit of international harmony that pervades the proceedings, Presidents and Prime Ministers have supported the Event and served as honorary chairmen of the Presidents Cup since its inception, allowing the competition to stand as a beacon of international goodwill that extends far beyond the fairway.
The most significant impact of The Presidents Cup takes place off the course. Players are not personally compensated for their participation. Instead each competitor allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of his choice. Since the event's inception, nearly $22 million has been raised
With the support of the Victorian Government, our Global Partner - Citi, The Royal Melbourne Golf Club and it's members along with the passion for sport that lives and breathes in this city, I have no doubt that the 2011 contest will continue in the event's tradition and atmosphere of good will and highest level of competition. We look forward to having you with us when history is made in November
